I am looking for a 5hp Briggs Engine. I have seen short blocks, long blocks, animals, raptors, inteks, flatheads, and others.

I just want a cast iron engine to fiddle with and learn with. What am I looking for?

Briggs 5 hp Flathead I/C have cast iron sleeves.

Briggs 6.5hp Inteks have cast iron sleeves.

Animals and raptors are racing engines.

Long block is just a full engine with head and no carb or exhaust.

Short block is no head/jug. Just bottom end.

You'd most likely want to look for the first I mentioned.

That is not correct. Long Block is an Extended in length clock. Short Block is the stardard briggs engine. Just take any 5hp briggs engine. Just use a kool bore =P

In length clock? You mean a stroker?

Well whenever i get a BRIGGS engine from ANY mower shop it is called a Small Block. It can be a long block technically because the cylinder is one with the block. I am going off what my Mower Shops call em

Major differences between the two.
Full cast iron block engines are easily found on Ebay.
Common and popular engines would be Briggs models 5s and 6s.
However, they are only 1hp and 1.5hp respectively. I must admit that I use the 6s on my one wheel drive yard kart just for S's and G's. I have an absolute ball with it on rainy days running on asphalt. 180's and 360's...you get the picture.
One of my Briggs from 1947 is 130lbs and is rated at 6.5hp.

I want a plain jane 5 hp briggs. Cast Iron.
An old tiller motor, probably.
Is that what you call a 6.

Is that a good choice?

Cast iron block or aluminum block with cast iron sleeve?
Last cast iron blocks were made in 1957.
