so... here it is... my homemade gas turbine i built when i was 18...(i'm 19 now lol). she is ready for testing... (those are old pics) now she is complete.

custom made combustion chamber & flame tube
custom made oil tank...
well everything is custom made :roflol:

only the oil pump costed me 125$ so i'll let you guys bet the total build price...

i dont know what to say more so if you have question dont be shy!

yaeh i'm going to try to fire it tomorrow (on propane only for testing) later i plan on running it on diesel... but i think the ignition is still too weak... we'll see.

should put out about 60 pounds on diesel (enough to move a kart)
and i designed the jet pipe so it can act as a flame holder for an afterburner but i wont put one for now on... seeing as the a/b burns more fuel than the turbine itself! lol (and wear the engine faster) and st-50 turbos are not cheap LOL!

and no lol the shopping cart is done. the jet will probably just sit on the test bench... (way too much money invested in it)

3" at the wheel is big. This is by no means a Honda turbo. It comes off a 6 cylinder in line Cummins Diesel.

VIDEO VIDEO VIDEO!!!!!!!

it failed to self sustain mostly because of the lack of fuel and the leaf blower wasn't enough powerful to spool the turbo at the correct speed ... m'eh next time maybe it's gonna start!

and you gotta get a good video of it working! i wanna see it! :)

BAMBY

i think i saw "diaphragm pump" on the oil pump in a pic... does that explain the reciprocating noise @ the beginning of the vid?

can that pump really stand up to the heat of the oil??? what pump model is it out of curiousity?

also where did you get that oil filter holder thing... looks like aluminum that the filter screws onto, that would be really helpful too. easy to contain the in and out of the filter!

this has been an interesting topic for me for a couple of years, seeing other guys videos on the net and stuff.

I never could figure out how i'd want to rig up the oiling system from a car to it or what...??? your pump is very simple tho.

do you know of any good resources to help design or give ideas on how to build the combustion chamber? i expect it vary greatly due to the size of the turbo. in addition to that, whats a real easy way to power a sparkplug like that for initial ignition... i understand once you get it going, you can stop the spark and it will self sustain the flame in the comb. chamb.

thanks for any info any1 provides, and great job to lemegacool:thumbsup:    on the turbocharger jet engine.

do you think it would have enough lbs. of thrust to move itself and the cart it is on?? or am i seriously underestimating this beast? i saw 60lbs. mentioned, that seems like plenty to move itself and its cart.

nice job again,
BAMBY

lemegacool
08-05-2009, 03:56 PM
no lol the noise at the beginning is from my camry's muffler LOL the pump is really silent... yes she can withstand hot oil and pressurise up to 80 psi (tested) the model number is 8000-643-236
this is the ONLY shurflo pump with the proper seals to do this...

the oil filter thingny i got it at princess auto... its an hydraulic inline filter.

for a oil pump you can use a car oil pump, power steering pump, hydraulic pump, basically any pump that can handle hot oil and put out about 80psi (i run my turbo on 50 psi)

ressource : http://www.ivcity.com/turbosoft/ nuff said!;)
also there is a diy yahoo group on gas turbine with GREAT info on it... i'm a member

for the spark a simple car coil wired on a custom pulser circuit will provide a good spark ( search "car coil driver" on google)

on diesel runs i plan on anchoring the test stand in the ground :) it should move it...

i'm waiting on my diesel nozzle... ist a very rare nozzle and i had to have it custom ordered from the states... next i'll have to find a way to mount a motor to one of my procon rotary vanes pumps to deliver the diesel...

updates will comes when they will be LOL

ok so got all the hardware needed to complete the new end plate... the last one warped badly when i welded on it... ok i welded a lot on it to plug holes but m'eh! i cutted myself a new one on the CNC plasma cutter at work... god i love this thing! lol

here is some pics of the final assy... the center nozzle is a 9gph delavan oil burner nozzle (supplied with pressurized diesel) and the little crushed hose barb fitting is the pilot flame nozzle (propane)

notice the cute little stainless tig welds on the homemade 1/4 npt fittings LOL

one question... whats with that spark plug? did u make that or what??? or can u buy that somewhere?

whats the next line of business after all this? cant wait for moar pics!

thank !!! yes i love beautiful weld too ... thats why i make them beautiful :roflol:

the spark plug is a special spark plug used i think in some older oil burners... i did a google search of like 6 part numbers/model of spark plug like these and THIS is the only one i found on the net... on a quite non-professionnal looking website but i bought it anyway LOL

what do you mean next line of businnes ??? on what will i put it or what other stupid vehicle will i produce... LOL

i think the logical thing would be plumbing it THEN making a video lmao just kidding

next i have to find a 12v motor powerful enough to direct drive a procon rotary vanes pump... i emailed RCDON (if you dont know him search for it on google) about that waiting for an answer...

this pump will supply the diesel via a bleed off pressure ragulator valve to the main nozzle

then many fitting and copper line to install rig a diesel tank and test run!! daytime this time LOL

hmmmm i forgot about the temperature controller... just finished programming it to cut off the fuel relay if the temp goes past 788*c and then resets at 600*c... the thermocouple that came with the controller will not be suitable because it is too short... i ordered a "screw-on probe" one... also bought a cheap 5w power inverter to run the temp controller... yeah... this thing runs on 120v ...

now i just need to actually wire the relay to the controller and add a big warning light! will do that when i'll receive the new "k" thermocouple

lemegacool
10-30-2009, 03:51 PM
ok i tested the fuel system and found that with the bypass valve all open i was still getting 20 psi at the nozzle... d'oh! reworked the bypass system an replaced the very restrictive needle valve by a biga$$ ball valve! didnt test it again but hey... it cant be worse than before... the delavan nozzle sprays with a nice fine mist! the procon pump is POWERFUL!!! i did a full load test and i busted my original fuel gauge...(rated 160 psi and it accidently putted like 220 in it...) thats why i replaced the fuel gauge and adjusted the internal bypass valve of the pump so it will open at 100 psi ,at 100 psi the turbine may not be at 100% power but i'll try with this first and then play with the laser tachometer to set the MAX rpm at 60000rpm (66000 is the max according to the program but i'll stick with 60000 ;))

now i need one of these "racing" switch cover to put on the ignition switch... as i dont want to accidendly trigger it and light the fuel fumes in the chamber...

pics! notice the changes...

you mean why did i dont wrote the tags in french? well basically because english words take less space to write than french words...lol

where is the output shaft?

this is a turboJET engine meaning that it only produces static thrust (should be around 60 lbs) to get shaft ouput i would have to build a power turbine with a reducer that will be driven by the exhaust gasses... but this would be VERY pricey and time consuming...

I think a turbocharged small diesel on a go kart would have sooo much power. Diesels have more potential than gas in my opinion

they have more low end torque... and supercharged ones would be awesome!

i did some testing of the engine this afternoon ...

did one scary hot start and the secont attempt was successful!

i only uploaded the sucessful test because i'm in a hurry right now but i'll upload the other one later...

had to stop because the pipe that connects the compressor to the combution chamber blew up in my face LOL guess my duct tape pipe enlarger didnt held up the 25 psi discharge pressure lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq8wk8EJBfk

this is the failure point... lol i pushed the duct tape use a little far i think LOL... i'm going to make a steel enlarger that will be welded on the combustion chamber... will not happen again... lol

****ing scary hot start.... i had no control on this... diesel was sprayed into the chamber but no lit up, so liquid diesel was in good amount into the chamber and decided to light... the result is this... yes i had pushed the big red button before lol

canadian tire... as simple as that lol

changed the oil ! MUCH thicker lol and welded up my steel ring, added some cooling fans and made a gasket out of some sort of asbestos gasket material

Never thought it was recommended to apply silicone sealant around the outside of a NPT fitting lmao. Whats the reason behind that?

I think its mainly because you are using those steel galvanized cheap elbows into good brass. I'd try to keep it brass all the way.

yeah i know but i dont know anywhere in my town that sells them (all brass) exept princess auto and shipping is awfully long...

oh well its a mini leak anyway... and the connection will all to be done again if i decide to transfer the engine into a shopping cart lol

awwwwww cant wait to fire her up again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

weeeeeeeeeeeeee just fired her up again!!!

THAT THING IS lOUD AS HELL

lol i took off my earplugs and placed myself at thr exhaust side... man i putted my earplugs back ASAP it REALLY sounds like a jet about to take off.

here is a video... sorry for the crap ending my camera died... and the engine stutted off seconds later because there was not enough juice left in the battery... sweet undervoltage fuel cutoff function! the exhaust temp overload cutoff works wonderfully too!!

still not running perfect... i think i have a fuel control problem ...not sure . and its burning oil... lol

dont think its surge... more likely a fuel or combustor design problem...

I didn't mean as in compressor surge, What I mean is the smoke comes and goes in little blips.

I found a website with a lot of links to other people's jet engine projects. Thought I would post it here if anyone would like to see. http://www.pfranc.com/projects/turbine/top.htm

yup thats a good link!

also if you're serious about building one of these i recommend joining the DIY gas turbine yahoo group (ok i know the text format sucks but its better than nothing)

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/DIYGasTurbines/

stay tuned.... i got a new AIResearch T04 turbo... new jet engine soon :D
