what are some of you guys using for shocks? i ve been looking around and they have mechanical, hydraulic..... etc. i think that most of the go kart shocks i have been looking at will be ok, but i am worried about them being to stiff. i figure the kart will weigh arounf 500 lbs. i know if i keep the shock mount towards the front of the swing arm the travel will be more towards the back than where the shock is mounted, but is 2 or 3 inches of travel still enough?
get quad shocks off ebay. If they are to still mount them closer to the hinge on the swing arm.

Or sled shocks, i got a few pairs, they have a good amount of travel.

well i went to tractor supply tonight and looked at there go karts. they have the same shocks i was looking at and they only had 3" of travel in the shock. but they way they were positioned (close to the pivot point) it had like 6 inches of travel were the axle was. so that is what i am going to get....

Those shocks are VERY soft. 100 LBS will compress both of them
If it takes 100 lbs to compress them 1" then they are ok.

If they are too soft even with proper positioning, you can always double up.
Here is a better deal.

i dont really want to get a used set, i d rather buy new. i tried buying used stuff and the wifey complained about making the kart crappy. i might just get the pair from northern that they have, i don t know. they are only 2 inches of travel but i know that is what they are meant for.... allthough 520 lbs seems like alot. maybe like stated above, i ll make a mount with several mounting holes for the top and bottom so i can move forward or back on the swing arm.

Umm..no..it takes 100 lbs to SMASH THEM. If you want a pair send me 10 bucks to ship them and I will retrieve them from my scrap bin.

I`m buying motorcycle shocks for my off road kart , you could use a single mono shock say from a 250 or so dirtbike on the back , I`m going a weird route on my rear setup , I`m going to use a set of front forks off a dirtbike and remove the inner spring and convert them to air , their 35"s long so I`ll make the top mount up on the roll cage and lower on the A-arms kinda like the way this Piranha is setup ,,;) Bill

Just to give you an idea, the Piranha uses 200lb springs on the back, and 600lb springs on the front.

I would just go for a pair of front end sled shocks. The shocks i got off a polaris storm take a hell of a lot of effort to compress, have a decent amount of travel and are 5 position adjustable.

what do you guys think about these shocks? maybe to stiff?
i m still not understand the difference between a mechanical shock and a hydraulic shock. i think these might be pretty good?

mechanical is just spring force, hydraulic have oil in them, so theyre the stiff ones

Rear trail bike monoshocks are best. Adjustable compression and rebound damping, adjustable pre-load, many different sizes.
