I finally started building my shifter kart that i've been planning for the last 6 months. I just picked up the metal on monday and i finished cutting out the pieces today. I did a mockup of the parts just to see how it's gonna turn out. i'm going to buy some racing kart wheels for it but I haven't gotten around to it yet

i started welding the frame but i ran out of wire and i have like no mone now so the project is on hold for a while. but i did get the wheels and finished the motor mount so it acually looks like a go kart now.

Engine specs? Being a free air engine I would recommend some scoops so it gets some wind.

it's from a yamaha rt-100. and ya since it's right behind the seat i'm gonna put some kind of a side air scoop that directs air throught the fins.

how do you hook it up so you can shift from the seat?

linkage...you can use push pull cables or tie rods or just about anything, its not hard.

Thanks, I am thinking about doin a shifter for FAST street kart. What kind of speeds are you looking for in this thing? I'm hoping to go at least 60

ya probably around 55 or 60 top speed. the bike i took the engine out of was pretty heavy and it could top out at 55. finding the right size sprocket is going to be the challenge with top speed. i think to get 60 i need like a 23t sprocket and the smallest 420 sprocket i can find is 28 so i'll probably go with that.

i would get a proper exhaust for it so that it will have a powerband

from my experances air coold engins dont work to well on a gokart most of the time ur not going fast to get good air flow

ya i have the exhause from the bike i just took it off for now. and the bike was just a play bike anyways and it was designed to learn on so it will probably be fine with low speeds.

I personally i would not gear it for 60, go for maybe 45 then step it up if you feel the engine has more. I made a 100cc shifter kart, geared it for 60 and the acceleration sucked, after 3rd it would completely bog down unless you let it redline before you shifted.

But either way if you do want a small sprocket i have a 40mm bore 428 sprocket, 24t i'd be willing to sell for $12 plus shipping, its split steel in good shape.

428 has a different roller diameter than 420 and i'm using a 1 1/4 axle anyways. thanks for the offer though

how many revs to redline? the power band is tunable as with any engine. the power band is where the engine makes the most power. if you use the stock gearing, i think you should hit 60 with a bit more acceleration than the bike had, provided you are straight shooting her. nvmd different size tires

stock gearing would be way too low. the bike had 20 inch tires and the kart has about 10 inch tires

no i've only made a little bit of progress. I picked up an offroad kart to fix up and sell, but it became a huge undertaking so I haven't had much time for this one. I'm getting the offroad kart painted this thursday so I should be working on it again soon.

i would put a spacer inside the spindles so that you can titen up the bolt if you do it up and withhout anything between the berings thay will get damagegd

well i've had a little more progress with this thing. the rear end is done except I need to find a sprocket. and the front spindles now have the ball joints. I bought some 1/2" tube for the tie rods but i'm waiting till I get the steering shaft in place before I finish them. I'm probably gonna try to finish up the motor mount next
