As you may already read on another thread I written, I am building a kart to race some friends of mine. They are both single and seem to have a endless budget but I on the other hand have limited funds. They went out and purchased racing karts and i bought the cheapest thing i could find. I'm converting it over to a live axle and going to run a yellow clone. I have most of the parts and just need to install everything. Here is some b4 pics and I will upload some after pics when Im finished!!

Lookin' good! Although I question the whole "racing against a shifter" deal. :arf:

Today I removed the gov. on my yellow clone and added a header and 18lb valve springs. That thang really sounds wicked and cant wait til i complete kart!!

Here is some pics of my progress..I used Airkraft stripper on the kart then borrowed a sand blaster and learned even with the sandblaster it was gona be tuff to remove but i ended up cleaning it up a bit then i painted it a gold rustoleum paint. I plan to buy a miller high life sticker and put down on the floor. And Im going to order a padded seat cover.....I also found online a really nice tach that I will mount in the steering wheel....http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000295643/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000295643/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000295643

Man you have a small rear sprocket...If you ever hit top speed your gonna cruise. Is that a powerwheels i see in the background? you should totally put a chainsaw engine in it.

Its a 40t sprocket..I plan to start out with a 14t clutch!!! lol@chainsaw on powerwheel

That race kart doesnt scare me, it doesnt even have an engine! haha no offense but your going to lose if thats gonna have a shifter engine in it.
By the way, i was serious about the chainsaw engine in the powerwheels...

Please excuse my ignorance on the subject because I thought shifter kart meant race kart.. My buddy’s karts will not shift. They will run the exact same engine as me, the Honda clone.

Its a 40t sprocket..I plan to start out with a 14t clutch!!!
I think you should gear it much lower. ATM you have a 1:2.8 ratio... I would be wanting more like 1:5, unless you have REALLY small wheels.
With such a high ratio I doubt you will be able to accelerate fast at all, won't be able to do drifts, and you will probably ruin your clutch very quickly.
Get a 10 or 12 tooth clutch, so you don't need to get a MASSIVE rear sprocket when you discover it has no acceleration.

If i go with a 12t clutch I want be able to get the top speed that i want but i will keep ure comments in mind...

60mpr

60mpr
Good luck with that...6.5 clone wont be able to accelerate to 60 very fast, and your clutches wont last long. I had a dirtbike engine on my kart once, the engine put out around 6-8hp, geared for 60. the kart was about the size of yours, i weigh like 175 and the kart would bog down by the time i tried to get into 3rd and had very little acceleration. The faster i ever got it was like 30mph before it bogged down. I suggest gearing it for around 40mph tops.

Ya you should seriously re consider gearing. I have a feeling this race will be decided mostly by gearing choice so consider the type of race your going to have before you decide.

You can try it...just make a vid of your clutch burning up.
Dare you to touch it after you ride it for about half an hour...i did that once, i put some snow on it and it actually boiled the snow.

the fastest really possible for a clone without a governor, and no major mods is about 45mph, and the torque/acceleration would be **** with a torque convertor it would get to 45 easier, but they are expensive!
timmytim
04-23-2009, 02:39 PM
what tooth sprocket/clutch combo do yall recommend?
r_chez_08
04-23-2009, 02:46 PM
check out this (http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator)
i recommend a 1:4/5 with 10/12" wheels or a 1:6 with 14"wheels
timmytim
04-23-2009, 05:05 PM
I know about the Calculater thats how I came up with gearing for 60mpr..I guess I will start out with a 12 on the clutch and see how that does.. I may end up going with a torque convertor setup.. Those torque convertors that say they have a built in jack shaft what exactly does that mean. I know what a jack shaft is persay but how is it built in on some?
:bannana:
03BLACKGT
04-23-2009, 05:48 PM
Well the "built in" ones are sold with a 2" or 3" rectangluar tube(box). The jack shaft is mounted through the tube(box) with 2 bearing. Then the motor is mounted on top of the tube(box). Its made so that you have the perfect distance between the drive and driven clutch assembly. All bolt on.
I know that might not have made any sense.. find some pictures and it will

After researching this site and pondering a bit I decided to get a Comet Torque-A-Verter for my kart.... It will delay my project a few weeks but I think it will be worth it.....

Should buy a motorbike engine. Costs about the same as a clone with torque converter, but is 100 times better.
You could get a motorbike engine for just the price of the torque converter, now that I think about it.

Yea motorcycle engine would be faster but i already have the yellow clone so need to stay with that. This project started out as jus a simple kart with maybe a brigs flatty but its keeps getting faster and faster...:drool5:

Ha-ha it’s hard to explain and see from the pics but it isn’t ure normal ridged frame because the front straight axle is mounted on via a stud or shaft that allows the axle to pivot up and down much like a suspension should..

how big of a trac are ya racing on? if it's a small bull ring you'll want a 12-72 for gearing on a 1/7 mile track you'd want a 12-60 anf for 1/5 mile track you'll want a 15/55 i wouldn't use a tork-a -verter it could burn up on racing karts they don't run tork converters get a good shoe clutch like a max-tork that has an adjustable setting and with the right setting it is capable of excelarating better than a car and will snap ya back in the seat some.i hope this will help some

O i forgot to tell yas that i finally got the flatty for my wifes kart..its a real good running motor.I had a problem though.I was trying to force my new 3/4 clutch on it and ended up breaking the cast in keyway on the clutch..After futher examination I realized that the shaft on the flatty was a dang gum 1 inch shaft. So Im building my funds back up so I can get them a new clutch.I will post some pics of it friday and maybe a video of my kart.:wai::wai::wai::wai::wai::wai::wai::wai::wai: :wai::wai:
