View Full Version : How much can you overvolt?

Day before yesterday I scored a electric minichopper, pics in a second when I take them...
Looking at my friends (Which is pretty much the exact same thing, just different paint job, less rusty, and newer)...

It seems to have a 250W motor and dual batteries (in which one of them were dead. $20 later and a trip to Academy, it's scooting along!)

So, I was wondering how much I could over volt this by? 24V standard, maybe 36? 42? Maybe even 48?

The power switching portion of the regulator would probably be able to handle the voltage as all it is is a MOSFET switch, a capacitor and a diode (usually on the cheap ones), it's the driver section you have to be careful with. The OP amplifiers they use for the oscillators and PWM and some of the other electronic components aren't rated for too high of voltages.

What I want to do it just run a el cheapo WalMart switch, and a simple wire connection directly to the motor...

Unless of course, I can safely do it through the eh... regulator?

How much power would you advise maximum I try putting through? (The regulator)

LOL, sorry, didn't mean to get too technical.

To be honest, I don't know that they would be able to take much more than the 24 that they're made for without some modification. Take a pic of the regulator and let me see if it's similar to what I got laying around. If it is, I'll take a look at it and see what it may be able to do.

And you got the charger! The ones I got for free I had to rig up a charger for :(

Unfortunately, that isn't like the ones I got :(. I don't know man, I couldn't tell you what would happen if you boosted the voltage.

Well, this is pretty much exactly like my friend's minichopper, which I hooked up a direct switch... Because his regulator broke when someone stole it and ran it into the curb...

Could I take that apart and have you take a peek inside? :)

Also, is this a dumb idea? Using Arctic Silver Thermal Alumina Thermal Adhesive, and attaching a buncha spare heatsinks to the motor in various places?

Even if you were to put them all over the motor and use a direct switch, the armature would eventually overheat and burn up inside anyway. It would be great if those motors were open and air could go through them, but I believe they're made sealed so dust doesn't get into 'em.

If you really wanna test out the regulator, try 36 first. I wouldn't jump up double the voltage right away.

Kibble is 100% correct. The motor can burnut the second you turn it on do it would be too late for the heat sinks.

you could cut a hole in the motor, weld up a piece of like 2'' pipe and put an air filter on it
but i think you should take that POC motor off and throw that little preformance briggs you got on there

I added 6V to the regulator. It didn't seem to be bothered at all :)

One good thing was that I placed the regulator in the front, so it gets more air :)

But would the heatsinks help?

Drilling cooling holes in the motor along with adding a computer fan(12 volt, you can over volt that to 24 while your at it) would help.

Luckily I still have the motor from my last conversion, so I can just follow it, but still o.o

Take the motor apart and do a nice job of drilling the holes.

umm just a little reminder. there are magnets around the circumference of the motor. also the motor is not what i would worry about when overvolting. its the control circuitry

Run along with a car or find one of those electronic "how fast are you" signs, should get you somewhere withing 3 mph.
