Just did some welding today. Just like to know what you guys think of my welding. I think it looks pretty darn good. I'm practicing different techniques.

I've been trying to use my school's MIG welder, after learning on my HF flux core. I can get pretty good beads on my welder, but when I try to use the nicer welder, all I get is a turd.

It comes with practice. I started off with a MIG then tried flux core and I found it was too smokey. It also helps to have nice clean steel.

If your going to trigger weld like that, make sure the metal (puddle) stays hot. If you stop to long between welds each one will end up with a small crack in the center of the weld.

Yeah, You got to keep it hot. I was just testing out different thing's. I've gotten better since.

Trigger welding looks clean but there is hardly any penetration. So al though it looks pretty, its still not a good weld. On your test piece you can see how there is no heat coloring on either side of the beads. So there is hardly any penetration. try doing circles or figure 8's overlapping each other. Focus on the Puddle and slowly push it or pull the puddle forward. If you are going to trigger weld make sure the heat is up HI. Good luck, keep practicing.

Yeah, That's what I was thinking. Penetration is questionable in that weld. I've practised alot and I dont need to trigger weld to get nice wave's anymore.

Don't worry to much about the uniformity in the beads, the row of nickles look will come in time. Just practice doing half circles or overlapping full circles. and the slower you push or pull the better. Make sure you bevel all the contacting material or edges so you get a deep penetration.
