Too bad you weren't on eBay a few weeks ago :(
There were literally 20+ 5 and 3HP gas tanks for sale. A guy was getting out of karting... you can imagine what he was selling for dirt low prices (like $10 shipped for a single tank )

Too bad you weren't on eBay a few weeks agoSo what? Can't get one retroactively.
The number your supplying is a vertical shaft engine.
The 3rd digit indicates horizontal or vertical.
0 through 4 is horizontal shaft.
5 through 9 is vertical shaft.
Your 3rd digit is 5 and therefore vertical.
Somewhere along the way, someone has swapped out housings. Some housings will fit both style engines.
3 possible tank sizes for your model engine. 3, 2, or 1 quart, depending on carburetor.

 stupid me. i forgot i took the housing off a vert shaft and put it on here cause it was missing the recoil start. thats why in the other thread i said i wanted a serial number for an engine cause this one didnt have it.

Do you have number from correct housing and what is wrong with old tank.
I've been known to work miracles on them.

Soak in acetone overnight and flush out. When varnish is removed, place some small metal parts in tank with water and shake vigorously. Flush again with water. If you do this correctly and long enough, tank will be like new. I guarantee it.

Be careful taking that cap off. I was in a situation just like you. In the end, when I took off the cap, the metal bit with the threads went with it.
Russ's idea with the metal is great. People usually use bolts n' nuts.

Recoil looks like it came out of a swamp. I have serious doubts about condition of everything else, especially carb. I don't think I'd put any money into this until you give it a complete physical.
Did you try what I suggested in post #8???

im not an idiot  engine looks great.(not sure about internals though) carb still has the original blue paint on it.

Send it to me. I can fix it provided tank is not perforated (rusted through). Just pay back and forth shipping.

havent gotten to that yet. been busy w/ my car. does it have to be acetone? anything else work?
Russ2251
08-04-2008, 04:11 PM
Acetone always works for me.
When something works, I stay with it.
Don't have time to jerk around. Take it from somebody who has been there/done that.
I was serious about what I said in post #15.

i got a quart of acetone at wally world. gonna try it whenever i have time. how many times should i do it?
Russ2251

Fill tank to about 1/3 and let soak for at least 8-12 hours. Swish it around every once in a while. Try to keep it covered and in a cool area as this this stuff evaporates very quickly.
how many times should i do it?Depends on how bad it is. Sometimes one time is enough. Just have to see how it goes.
Crap that comes out IS toxic. Don't try to re-use it. Place used stuff in a disposable metal container (coffee can?) and just let it evaporate and then chuck it.

o. well. what i did was do a 1/4 to 1/3 full of acetone. threw some nuts and screws in there, and started shaking it around. i kinda got carried away and the little holder tank disinegrated
so anyone got a 3.5hp briggs engine? i just want the numbers off of it

i kinda got carried away and the little holder tank disinegratedKinda jumped the gun with nuts and screws. Doesn't really matter. If tank was that weak, it was destined to be replaced anyway.
Correct way would have been to soak (8-12 hours) and flush with acetone first.
Then fill with water along with small bolts, nuts, washers etc.
Then shake around. Will take several cycles of this until tank is pristine. Looks like factory new. I've done this on tanks dating back to days of Briggs powered washing machines.
Next time I need to do this, I will document w/pics.

For calcium lime or rust CLR is a must.
