I'm sure some of you have done or at least heard of this, but I've made this thread anyway.
I recently took the gasket of my Tecumseh, and replaced it with some gasket maker. You can buy it at any auto parts store, including Napa, for just a few bucks. I then bolted the head plate back on. I let it cure for 24 hours, and when I started it up, I noticed it had a much larger amount of power. I could tell just from pulling the starter cord, it had tons more compression than before. It even sounds different. It has a kind of a deeper, more satisfying sound then it ever had.

I have 2 identical MAC trimmers. I did the mod to one, and it ran MUCH better. Did the mod to the other one and I had TONS of detonation.

Did you try higher octane fuel in the detonating one?

I know. The engine is JUSTfor playing around with. Not 100% performance. I just like to fire it up every so often.

Most common is 100LL (low lead 100 octane), buy it at any airport. Almost $6 a gallon.
