Well, the lighter method worked. When flicked, it would go dark, then lighten up. Woohoo! Thanks Kibble ;)

Well, back at Victoria (No, TX, not Canada :D)

Should be taking it back today.

lol why does it take all of these pages #3 to learn how to get this welder dialed in? open the box take out welder feed wire put it on some random setting and just try it out.

Now it's on #4!!!!! :roflol: But I'll split it up later.

I'm still scared :(

Hehe, getting that welder tomorrow. Does it HAVE to be unpainted?

ed1380
07-04-2008, 07:21 PM
what unpainted?

Kenny_McCormic
07-04-2008, 07:24 PM
Dont be scared but do be respectful, just wear eye protection and you will be fine. Gotta be unpainted to start the arc.

oscaryu1
07-04-2008, 10:09 PM
Oh... how do I remove paint? Use those paint removers or paint stripper acids or something?

Burn it? :p

ed1380
07-04-2008, 10:38 PM
rotary tool w/ wire brush for paint or rust

or just use a grinder

remove it just where the weld is going to be

kibble
07-04-2008, 10:38 PM
I just use a stiff wirebrush on the area I'm gonna weld to get rid of anything on the metal.

Kenny_McCormic
07-04-2008, 10:38 PM
I just scratch the area with a screwdriver down to bare metal, you only need to do right where the weld is gonna be.

Too many power tools on same circuit as welder=blown fuse and damaged welder. BEAT YOU!

Hmm... I have... some old broken Briggs recoils. Would those do?

jr dragster Tyler
07-05-2008, 08:02 AM
That's pretty thin metel. Just under nearth your previa or the corolla and weld some stuff. Should be pretty thick:roflol: there.

Haha, I'll just turn it to 1 and Min :D

Previa or CAMRY  :D

what does the wire speed range go to? IIRC ours goes to 9 and we keep it around 3

oscaryu1
07-05-2008, 01:11 PM
9 or 10 also... Heh, what do yall recommend? If I try n' do very thin metals? (AKA scrap recoils n' old sprockets)

ed1380
07-05-2008, 01:34 PM
might burn through if its under 1/16 or an inch

try something 1/8 and thicker. weld scratch pieces together.

jr dragster Tyler
07-05-2008, 10:00 PM
I agree with Ed. flux core welding doesn't like thin metels.

Kenny_McCormic
07-05-2008, 10:24 PM
I agree with Ed. flux core welding doesn't like thin metels.

But you can get away with welding really thin to thick if you stay more towards the thick piece, dad repaired the seat strap (thinner than a cereal box to 1/8" tubing) on my manco that way (dont trust my skills that well).

oscaryu1
07-06-2008, 10:53 AM
Hmm... 1/8"? That's... quite thick... I don't think I have many things that... thick. Should I go to Lowe's n' get 2 1/8" metal pieces?

Kenny_McCormic
07-06-2008, 11:01 AM
You dont have any little scrap bits lying around?

oscaryu1
07-06-2008, 02:36 PM
Eh... Oh, now that I remember, I have a dead mower engine (rod bolts stripped, n' rings are gone). So I have those parts... but I'd rather keep the mower deck, as it has that auto walking mechanism that works perfectly.

OH! I have the mower blade that came with it! Spring steel if I remember correctly... weld that to the side cover or something?

Snap the rod in half and weld it together. weld the cam to the crank.

Lol. The rod bolt is stripped :(

I'll use my spare parts! Weld my ARC Billet rod back together, and my 94ss to my dual bearing .999 crank! :D Jk jk :p

But honestly... ?

ed1380

I don't have a single broken rod... But I have around 5 Briggs 5HP rods, and 1 GX200 rod that I don't need...

I cant belive you have NOTHING scrap like with a .120 wall (1/8) steel.

You make walls out of steel?

Kenny_McCormic

You make walls out of steel?

Steel is used quite a bit for offices and such.

jr dragster Tyler
07-07-2008, 01:24 PM
No, when somone says "wall" they mean the thickness of the metel. for example 1 1/2 X .120 hat means the metel is hollow and it is 1 inch and a half wide and it is 1/8 thick.

I feel like a noob :(

Anywho... mower blade so far. Will the light rust n' grass make a difference?

Also, is keeping your welder in your van on a hot day bad?

Oscar, why don't you experiment? You'll learn from experience about what you can and can't weld and under what circumstances they weld best. :idea2:

Yep, start screwing around, its how you get started in this sort of stuff.

Anywho, if anyone cares, welder works! WOOT :D

The ON light powered on, fan turned on, and when pressed the trigger, the feed motor came on :D

W00t :p

And... I'll be staying at Victoria will Wednesday :(

Remember to pay attention to your puddle of molten metal and not to the arc. What the puddle does is how the weld will turn out.

oscaryu1
07-21-2008, 09:12 PM
I took a few vids, but my DSL provider is screwing up a bit, it always stops after 10 mins or so. I'll get that figured out tomorrow.

It was VERY ugly, I'll tell you that right now.

How long will it take to get that little puddle?

AutoMX
07-22-2008, 01:20 AM
theres no actual rule, basically every weld is different and the metal and shape and size will vary how much heat is needed and how much is lost. the puddle will be a shiny bead that looks like mercury or molten solder, dancing as the wire burns and feeds it.
you need to keep it really steady to get a nice line, otherwise your welds will be line my earlier ones, a bunch of dots everywhere. yes if done well enough they will hold, but its inefficient in wire costs, and really slow if your welds are dirty. it's best to just get the pretty and steady line.

oscaryu1
07-22-2008, 06:19 AM
I was told I should start off with waiting 3 seconds for the bead to form? Is this correct?

ed1380
07-22-2008, 07:02 AM
puddle forms almost immedietly

jr dragster Tyler
07-22-2008, 09:34 AM
Well oscar when I was using flux core wire in my welder (I decided to try it) it took at least 2 seconds to start a good puddle. Flux core welding takes longer to form a puddle because the wire is hollow with flux inside. The outside of the wire is the filler and the inside is the flux sheilding.

oscaryu1
07-22-2008, 10:22 AM
Eh, Tyler, I looked at it yesterday and today, it's not hollow inside lol... It's solid... Or at least the one that comes with HF still is.

I got a few pictures... And do they stink for a first timer... :)

Lemme upload 'em.
