I picked up a 1981 Honda ATC250r..i traded an old ice auger for it..not sure why im getting more projects but this was just a steal. It needs a rebuild cus it smokes like hell but i tell ya, this thing pulls HARD.Ive only had it up to 3rd so far(loud and smokes alot) and it the front end comes up everytime you hit that powerband.Heres a few pics, shes ugly, but has some potential.I believe its rated at 29 hp..but it makes a bit more as i has a 36mm Mikuni( 27mm Keihin stock) a reed spacer and some kind of aftermarket billet intake..

Just poke around peoples yards if you see something you like ask them if you can buy it.. They usually give away free / cheap.

Yep i love the 3 wheelers lol. I really dont want to sell my other projects( go kart, minibike, dirtbike, golf cart) but i might have to..to make room for my new stuff. Im just not into the smaller 5 hp's anymore, i like the big stuff :sifone:

Buddy its a 2 stroke, its gonna smoke, is the gas mixed? or does it have an injector? or did the guy you bought it from do both?

I know 2 strokes smoke, but most dont smoke as bad as this, this is over the normal. Its premix, i think ill change the gas and see what happens, the previous owner might have put seafoam or something in there?

Kenny_McCormic
06-26-2008, 09:40 PM
Previous owner might have 10 year old varnish mixed 10:1 with 30 weight in there for all you know. What is the purpose of the rubber bits in between the fins?

crazycart
06-27-2008, 09:31 AM
Im guessing the rubber things are there to keep the fins from breaking/bending.

WHAT a deal. A genuine Honda too! 29HP? Crazy fast. More pics and vids!

I will get a vid up later today. I checked the tranny oil, it was full of gas/crap. That was probably why it was smoking.. I gotta say though, My 400 trike is rated at 38hp, it tops out at a higher speed(70+mph) but the 250r accelerates WAY faster. I thought the 400 was alot to handle, but this thing is just wild.

Heres a little vid of it running( i took it with my phone so crappy quality)

I also took it on a little voyage today, my dad rode the 400 yami, it was smoking bad the hole way, but man was it going. It dont do very well on pavement but it freakin rips on dirt. Not to mention it totally smokes the 400 in acceleration. My dad would be far in front of me and id hammer the throttle and wheelie on past :sifone: Its the only thing i have that i gotta lean forward to keep the front end down in all gears :rolleyes3:

crazycart
06-27-2008, 05:13 PM
Yeah the carb is a bit rich, im going to re-jet it. I might also have to replace the left crank seal because gas was in the transmission..

I worked on the r a bit today, got some steel and cut it into 6" peices and notched them for the swinger. Came out pretty nice. I welded it with a Lincoln Pro 100 with flux core wire so the welds arent very clean but they're strong.

Swinger mocked up.

Neato, why are you stretching it?

crazycart
07-07-2008, 06:49 PM
Its pretty common for people to stretch the swing arms on ATC's, it gives a longer wheelbase, better handling, less tippy, and keeps the front end down a little more :biggrin5: not to mention it looks cool too haha

Kenny_McCormic
07-07-2008, 07:28 PM
less tippy,

Made a custom grab bar, and put on a sled front shock, the shock works very well and its much better than the old one.

What's a grab bar for? Dragging people across the lawn?

crazycart
07-08-2008, 08:18 PM
Picking it up from the rear, Pulling stuff, but most importantly it stops you from breaking the fenders if you wheelie to far :arf:

Now i just gotta get a longer chain, fresh gas, and some quality Honda oil.

crazycart

Thanks, and yeah id would be too, but when you run cheap oil in these higher performance engines, they smoke alot. I ride this thing almost everyday, lots of fun.

Heres the 2 trikes together

we run 50:1 in all of our 2 strokes.

I prefer 32:1 in almost everything, 25:1 in the monster saw just cause its an antique and doesnt get run often.

Russ2251

Very generally speaking, piston ported engines need less oil while reed inducted systems need more. There are exceptions.
Running temperatures are also factored in. That is, the hotter it runs-the more oil it needs.

I been kinda looking for one of the Honda air cooled CR's with that same type engine - late 70's all red CR250 or 400 - before they started all the water cooled stuff. Good find for you.

crazycart
08-09-2008, 09:09 AM
Yah i love the air cooled ones, Just because of the pure simplicity, and with a few mods they are VERY fast. Even though id love to own a liquid, because of the power they make, its just more things to fix lol...

Wait, since I know nothing about them, you mean to tell me that those ATC's have 2 cycle engines in them?

Russ2251
08-09-2008, 02:19 PM
A Two Cycle or ATC, correct?

Kenny_McCormic
08-09-2008, 02:49 PM
Stands for All Terrain Cycle, some are 2 stroke, others are 4 stroke, I know the 90cc ones are 4 stroke.

crazycart
08-09-2008, 04:58 PM
Yes of the performance ones(Honda) there are 200x which is a 4 cycle, 250r 2 cycle, and the 350x 4 cycle.Other companies also made racing machines(Yamaha, kawasaki, Tiger, Husky, Cagiva) This is the 1st generation air cooled 250r(1981-1982) Then there were updated ones with better suspension and a bit more power in 83-84. In 85 and up they switched to liquid cooled which make around 40 hp stock. All the 2 cycles have reeds.Quick machines none the less

2or3wheels
08-09-2008, 10:46 PM
BUT the 200s motor has more power. i will try and find some evidence, but that is what i have seen one some 3 wheeler forums
HEHE i have a 200s i am takin apart tonight, needs some timing help, man it sucks getting blots out that have been in there for 25 years, the aluminum is wraped around then, BREAKER BAR BABY

Hmmm, I'll have to go back to that one junkyard I mentioned earlier and see what's in that ATC!:drool5:

crazycart
08-10-2008, 07:59 AM
200s does not have more power than any of the trikes mentioned above, the 200x has more aggresive porting therefore making more power.

VERY NICE FIND. A friend at our KartFests has similar trike, and holy cow, its fun! We've tried to GPS it's top speed, and none of us have made it past 60, because we're trying to hold the GPS and ride at the same time. Okay for gokarts, but this thing is such a handful, it's just too hard to do both. The next time we try it (we will!), we're gonna duct-tape the GPS to the tank. Here's a picture of it.

crazycart
08-27-2008, 07:30 PM
If its air cooled in a chassis in the picture, its a 1983-1984. These were an upgrade from the 81-82 with a new frame, suspension, but same engine, just higher compression ratio.
