Will trade 196cc 6.5hp Honda GX-200 clone (Lifan) for Lawn-Boy DuraForce engine.
Clone is brand new and was only run once for QC evaluation and has no issues. I have no need for this engine and has to go.
Lawn-Boy (engine only) can be any year DuraForce model 'E'. Must be a running engine but will consider non running if in good/excellent mechanical condition (unintended oxymoron). Contact me through diygokarts.com.

Oh,oohh!.... Russ is making his move! I saw a type "g" on ebay last night, but it looked like the 4.5hp model. That's why I didn't bug you with it, plus I've got the feeling that if it's DuraForce, you've seen it before I have! Good luck!

Depends, not all models will work. Model #'s are not posted so I can't cross reference part #'s for usable crankshafts.
BBC and geared auxiliary pto engines won't work.
I never tried to fit electric start (too heavy).
Some electric start models do not have a recoil which comes in handy if starter fails.
I would not purchase these 'oldies' as mechanical condition is unknown. Would be better off cruising neighborhood or scrapyard for freebies. They're out there, you just have to look.

5024 is 1977 model 'D 433' engine and there is no easy way (that I know of) of setting up exhaust pipe/muffler. You will see what I mean when disassembled.
Same thing for 7261 (1972) and 7263 (1974). Both of these are 'D 600' engines.
All the above are 3.5 hp.
Unidentified mowers are 'F' engines and can possibly be used. PTO's have to be examined which would require removing engines from mower housing. These are 4.5 hp.

on another thread i seen where you said to go to to get the manuals.Best advice I can give.
Never EVER make assumptions when tearing engines down or re-assembling. Torque all screws/bolts according to specs. When you run across needle bearings be careful not to drop them as they are notorious for getting lost. If you do drop them, don't use a magnet to pick them up. Reasons are obvious.

o my:censored: there is no way to put a exhuast on these motors this is a problem for sure because man its going to be very loud.started on one of the motors today got it off the mower and setting it up on a stand will post picture later got a few ? already:mad2: :mad2:

there is no way to put a exhuast on these motors this is a problem for sure because man its going to be very loud.I did mount and run the 'D' engine (5024, 7261, 7263) but never used it because of exhaust problem.
Check out the unidentified engines first as these appear to be the most promising because they have threaded exhaust holes.
I will post pics of usable engine blocks this evening. Usable engines are model 'F's', 'V's' and 'E's'.
Your 2 unidentified engines are 'F' engines and show the most promise.
Hopefully they do not have auxiliary pto for transmission.

Hello,
I was diverted here from a lawnmower site after seeing russ's kart. I was wondering if you tore that commercial lawn boy apart? It would be a pain to use that motor potentially due to the clutch setup, I would think. Any chance you would sell the motor & handle to me? I'm in Wi so you'd have to ship. I could swap you a duraforce motor as well. They are everywhere around these parts. I also have numerous f engines as well. Let me know. Sorry to intrude like this on my first post. Thanks. -Dave

That's what I want to know. The only reason I can think of that you couldn't mount an exhaust pipe to it easily would be that there is nowhere to screw a flange or it's just a hole that can't be threaded.
Russ2251
06-17-2008, 05:24 PM
there is nowhere to screw a flange or it's just a hole that can't be threaded.Yes to both.
Engine muffler is mounted to underside of mower housing.
When engine is bolted to mower housing, it meets muffler flange with a gasket sandwiched in between.
First pic is of exhaust port.
Second pic is completed prototype with 'D' engine. This was never tested. A couple of weeks later I came across an 'F' engine (freebie) which is more user friendly.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!! I never said anything bad about 2-cycles! I had one before I ever owned a 4 stroke. I loved the engine I just didn't have any of the tools of the knowledge at the time to do anything useful with it. It was a homelite weed whacker engine that I got for like $10. Second engine I ever played with, first was a 2 cycle R/C car nitro engine. Sometimes I would just start the 2 cycle homelite to listen to it run. I jumped right on the opportunity to buy that LawnBoy when I saw it. I've tried to look for more LawnBoys around here but I haven't found any.
Can I join your club now and not be vertically shafted?:Angel_anim:

Whoa again! It's not sitting on the floor! There you go making assumptions! It's IN a box that's on the floor, mind you! Besides, I didn't just take it off the deck and not do anything else. I did order the Tillotson carbs. I still need to do something about the air filter though. I don't have a solution for that yet. I also went out and bought the fitting that will go to the pump in the carb.
I'm not trying to rush into it because it's the only engine of it's type I have. I want to take the time to get it done correctly. Who knows if I'll ever get the chance to get another one.

Dang! The offer is closed!?! Too bad. I just found a project behind one of the machine shops in Chandler. Someone grafted two DuraForce motors side by side (twin with twin carbs) and converted it to horizontal. He sold it to me for $40 because it turns out it was too powerful and loud for his golf cart. I would much rather have a clone motor and....

Answered via PM.
Answers to most questions regarding vertical to horizontal conversions with most 2 cycle Lawn-Boy engines (not 'M's, 'C's or 'A's) are posted throughout this site (various threads).
Things are just too nuts for me to document all of it in one place. Perhaps a dedicated thread? Not up to me. May not be enough interest to keep it alive for very long.
On occasion, my inbox is inundated with questions. About half of them come from this site. I would rather answer questions in these forums so that anyone/everyone, who may be interested, can benefit.
Keep in mind that the use of L-B engines is not a cheap or easy answer to replace the garden variety Briggs or Tecumseh 4 cycle.
Thanx,
Rusty

Sorry for the delayed response.
I am no longer looking to trade my clone for a DuraForce as I won a 3rd one on Ebay.
Someone else in this forum showed some interest but decided against it. Hence the delayed response.
I would strongly recommend not parting out mower as they are much more valuable complete. I've seen them going for upwards of $300. Not many folks are interested in parts, unless it is a restoration project and parts cannot be gotten any other way. DuraForce are still relatively new (1998 to 2004) and new factory original parts are still in production.
Thanx for posting.
