Have you tried checking your local Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/) group or craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org)? You can get some decent free stuff from other people on there.

Just ask for anything with a horizontal shaft running or not.

why not running?

Because if it doesnt run you can pretty much bargain it down to nothing. And normally the only thing wrong with these engines is a simple carb clean or a spark plug Etc.

Corroded points are common one as well.

I was going to say somthing like a coil and the points but just to keep it simple untill he actually has to worry about that I never mentioned it.

yeah there not really much that can go wrong in these engines cause they have only ....*counts on fingers*.... 5 moving parts in a briggs flathead, not counting the valves and lifters and stuff cause they just move up and down.
It'll be simple to fix.

What's to worry about points? Cut the wire off and replace it with a magnetron :roflol:

When somebody drops a nuke, dont come whining to me about your stuff not running.

is it hard to alter a vert-shaft to run in horizontal?

Do all small engines have points? I do not fully understand what it does. Because on my jr dragster all I have is a wire off the coil going to the spark plug?http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll33/juniordragster123/DSC02135.jpg

The 2 wires off the coil are for normall kill switch and emergency kill switch. So without points does that mean that every time the magnet goes past the coil it sparks the plug? That would mean it "wastes" a spark because it only actually ignites fuel ever 4'th stroke.

Virtually all engines use breakerless (without points) systems and use CDI or Capacitive Discharge Ignition. Requires little or no maintenance.
If you had points in your engines, performance would suffer greatly.

So Russ what about when the magnet goes by the coil ones on exaust but then the next one is actually igniting fuel? So what about the spark wasted not lighting fuel? does the plug still go off or does it build energy on the exaust stroke spark and zap it on the fuel stroke?

Spark goes off every time the psiton comes close to TDC no matter your coil, tiny amount of power wasted cant be measured at the crank, KISS.

Mr. McCormic is correct.
Spark plug does fire twice in 4 cycles. As combustion cycle has all ready taken place, there is very little (if anything) to ignite on 2nd revolution.
However, if you have a faulty plug that misfires (blows out) on combustion cycle it CAN fire on next revolution which would be around the time intake valve opens causing a true backfire.
True backfire exits intake, not exhaust.

Yeah thats what I was making sure of that it actually sparks after fuel ignition has lit

what do you think would be good for a beginner kart, off road, doesnt need to be fast

Live axle, roll cage, 6.5HP+, low gearing.

Hey, megaman1339! Here in AZ, besides a Hell-Like weather model, we have a place called "Deseret Industries" which is like Goodwill, but they tend to get more of the greasy fun stuff. If there's something like that near you, go scouting for old reel-mowers and tillers. They have LOTS of useful bits besides the engines to salvage. My 1st adult project was based on the B/S 2hp ($12), 5:1 gearing and the HF $5 10" wheels, and it worked okay.... if you can find a B/S 80000 series (3hp) or (YOU LUCKY GUY!) a B/S 90000 series horizontal shaft motor (3.5hp) then you'll be fine for single seat work. Watch my thread in the Gallery section in the next couple of days... I'm going to GPS my stock B/S 2hp motor, which I'm pretty sure is hitting 28mph on level ground with me (210lbs) in it, and try to post the video.

Fix it up and KEEP IT. IMO Robin engines are excellent. My experience with them would be using them over a period of 24 hours in an endurance race. If you can get a clutch for it, get teh Robin.
