Here's an update on Older Yellower.... Put new tires on, new bearings on the front wheels, yanked the Tecumseh PowerSport motor (pretty messed up) and got rid of the annoying foam bits. I'm test fitting it for my Tecumseh 3hp, and I'm going to take it to a carwash and clean it up and prep it for painting. It's still going to be yellow with the black engine, but with white rims.

my experience with trying to paint rims is that old tires will be stuck on those rims... UGH! that was such a b*tch to do!
JerryAssburger
05-31-2008, 09:35 PM
The rims had to come apart anyway, because the tires were shot, plus, I wanted to get rid of the Bling-Bling gold rims on the front! When my grandson and I took it to the carwash, we found out yellow wasn't the original color- so now I'm going to paint the frame Lime Green and the rims red. I'm leaving the motor black. Just sandblasted the rims and gave them their first coat. I'm going to try and bake them in the oven at 200f for 30 minutes... I've heard this makes the paint a lot tougher.

OK, Jerry, before you ask about what's going on and why this thread says: "Je......#2" I'll answer the question for you.
We're trying out something new where threads that break the 3 page barrier get locked and the rest of the posts get moved to a new thread, in this case, with the same name but with a #2 at the end. We're trying this out because trying to find a post that you saw and wanted to go back to gets kinda hectic when you have multiple pages that you have to dig through.
With the split, the goal is to hopefully help people remember where they saw a particular post without having to dig through pages and pages of posts. I have done the same with my thread, as it was already going on 5 pages.
If you guys have any inputs, ideas, or opinions about this method of handling lengthy threads, feel free to post them on the announcements forum.

THX on the kart! I just pulled the wheels, seat and motor to do a rattlecan job on it. Now I'm at the "What Engine to Put on it That I'm Willing to Part With?" phase.... Slight Update on the Lowrider 2.0/Snowmobile Engine project.... I've been busy taking measurements of the motor, ATC axle, seat, etc.... rendered it on the PC and got fancy with an animation. I'm not finished with the modeling- I still have the handlebars, the footpegs and the secondary pulley/jackshaft to stick in there, but I got lazy at this point. Either way, this is pretty much where I'm headed with this project. The wheels are trailer wheels (8" rims/16" diameter). The frame will be welded up from 2.5" 1/8" wall square tubing (or whatever that beefy-heavy stuff is that I have in the back yard!

Hahaha! Thanks!
I pretty much "weighed" my options with engine/axle placement, and that was the best I could come up with, since the header sticks out the front of the motor, it had to be well back from the seat. Although it looks horribly tail heavy, the front of the kart is plenty heavy enough for it to sit level without the rider in it. When the rider gets in, it'll have a more forward weight bias. At the axle, with the lowest ratio from the converter, it'll be about 220 ft.lbs max.... enough to spin the skinny trailer tires, but not enough to lift the front end. That's why I went for the trailer tires over the ATC spongy tires.... plenty of cornering grip and highway speed capable, and more likely to spin than cause trouble taking off and around corners.(live axle) I don't plan on mud bogging with the thing. My real paranoia stems from the front fork joints. I figured out that I'm going to use the old trailer wheel hubs/bearings/spindles for the steering head, but I plan on bracing the living daylights out of each joint/weld with gussets in every conceivable way! Even with the Lowrider's lightweight construction, I've never tweaked it, but the thought of that thing coming apart at speed..... EEEEeeesh!
*ooooouch!* (E.T.)
Brief update on the TreeFrog, AKA Older Yellower- thought I'd take a chance and see if my stone-reliable B/S 2hp would get it down the street and believe it or not, it maxes out the governor (27 mph-ish; no GPS-ing yet) with my lard_ss in it, but take-off is NOT good. As a matter of fact, when the front wheels are turned (like, for a U-turn) the live axle prevents the kart from moving. I'm going to have my son (100 lbs) try it and see how it does, since people MY size aren't supposed to be on the thing anyway... Kinda looking like it's going to be one of my revered B/S 3hp engines to the rescue. Otherwise, the kart corners on rails- even with my spindly hand-truck tires on it!

JerryAssburger
06-13-2008, 11:49 PM
Yeah- sort of a weird way to let the smaller tykes in on the action, I guess. I barely fit on the thing, and have to use the far pedals. A friend told me that it's some sort of old "Tiger" kart. I've found nothing on it so far, but he swears he's seen this model somewhere.

Brief update. The Treefrog will hit 30mph in one direction and 26mph the other with the little 2hp. It takes a couple of blocks to get up to that speed though! Time for the 3hp.

If I were you, I'd build my own front end set up for the sled engine Lowrider. With that much power and speed, you'll definitely want something stronger than that 1" threaded steerer fork and wedge gooseneck. I ride BMX and there is a reason we stopped using those in favor of 1 1/8 threadless steerers and threadless stems.
JerryAssburger
06-21-2008, 01:24 PM
That'll REALLY be a challenge in itself when I get to it!
Here is the finished Treefrog, with B/S 3hp (NOW it has enough power!) I have to put it up for sale on the local CraigsList. It's a shame to let this one go, but I promised. At least I learned a lot of tips on making a live-axle kart handle decently. This one corners great, and with a BlueTerror on the back, would be a great drifter.

Hey everybody! Possible final update on TreeFrog.... TRIED to put the BlueTerror on it, and the gas tank interfered with the seat. Couldn't move it back any further, because the axle is RIGHT THERE! So I took a hunch and ASSumed that a smaller tank from a GX120 would bolt up and ordered it on ebay. The front two bolts had to be trimmed back, the bottom of the support shell had to be heavily Assburgered to clear the throttle linkages (That's what I get for ASSuming!) but in the end it works pretty well. Now this kart is like the ultimate drifter in the dirt, and will even break 'em loose a bit on pavement. I think this kart would be a good candidate for the minor mods I want to try on a BlueTerror to get it to breathe and safely rev to 5000 rpm. (43 mph). I'm going to order a 53 tooth 2-piece sprocket for the axle, the current one os a 60 tooth.

Update on the Treefrog....
Cruddy HarborFreight Handtruck tires are shredded wheat. (Imagine that?!?!....) Everyone loves this kart and that's why the tires lasted just one season! SOOOOOooooooo.... I've been looking to put slicks of similar size to their destroyed counterparts, and I'm using the Clone/Torq-a-Verter combo on it. I'll have to move the motor back 6" and raise it about 2" (which shouldn't effect the handling too much) and I'm swapping the final drive to a 4>1 ratio.
This will give a 10>1 starting ratio and still allow the kart to top out at 37 mph with the governor still hooked up. But, as discussed in other parts of this forum, I'm going to cave in to temptation and mod the motor with better exhaust, better air-filter, and re-jetting for proper mixture.
This will all be limited by Time & Money. (Like ALL things in the Known Universe)

I won THIS flywheel puller on Ebay and will hopefully be knocking a certain flywheel loose from a certain engine. (STILL under tension with the old puller in the shed.) I get the feeling it'll work, as it's a BEEFY puller. Since the trike was built for this engine, it'd be a lot easier than making the Polaris 295 work on it. If I HAVE to use the Polaris, I will but, aside from the dual carbs, I can't see too much of a performance improvement happening. Both motors are 295-ish CCs, both put out peak hp in the low 7000 rpm range.... I just don't see any huge difference worth swapping them for if both run.
...hopefully this will steer a thread with MY NAME on it away from the whole P_doBear thing, which I'm understandably not too eager to be associated with in any way.
