cant get starter going

I have a honda gx340 and was going to clean the engine up (got it used). I was going to take the starter assembly off to route some wires easily but instead of taking the assembly off I accidetly took the starter apart. Now I can't get it going. I've tried reseating the springs and putting it back toghther a number of times. I must not be doing it right.

can anyone make sense of this and why it isn't working when I put it back together?

Well, First of all, you're missing the carbon brushes at the end of those springs, where are they? :confused:

When it came apart I never saw them.

Ooh... that's no good! The springs can't be on the commutator by themselves. Did it ever work to begin with since you got the engine?

In the second picture down, what is that on the top left hand corner of that assembly attached to what looks like a copper wire?

A little square piece of metal. there are 2 on that piece and 2 on the assembly

I'm trying to get you a service manual that will hopefully show you how it all goes together. It says it's a service manual for GX240, 270, 340, and 390, but I haven't seen it for myself yet. PM me your email and I'll send it to you if I can get it.
