ok you got to give us a little bit of info what motor and what wrong with it whats it doing.

I am not sure what motor it has it just says tecumseh on the side and sticker says 195cc. the previous owner said it ran fine but sat for a long time (6 months) and when he went back to start it it would not start. it has gas in the tank. i took the spark plug out and cleaned it. i even checked for spark which seems a little low but it still won't start. what do you think?

hum... check the filter drain all the old gas put new gas in and replace the plug with new one than see what happens.hopefully that will get it started .o yea make sure it has oil in it dont want to lock it up.

Carefully put 1 teaspoon of fresh gas into sparkplug hole. Put plug back in and start (no choke) . This will tell you if engine has enough fire and should run for a short burst. If it doesn't fire then you have an ignition problem. If it does fire up but does not continue to run...then you have a fuel flow problem. 6 months is not a long time for an engine to sit even if fuel is left in system. Would just be hard to start initially.

Drain all the old gas, and spray gas/2 stroke/carburetor cleaner/starting fluid into the hole... most likely the carburetor is gummed like heck.

6 months is not a long time for an engine to sit even if fuel is left in system. Would just be hard to start initially.I recently acquired a 7 hp Briggs (1986) from a Jacobsen snowthrower. Tank was half full with very stale gas. Gas was at least 2 years old. It started on 6th pull and a little coaxing. Tecumseh carbs/engines are somewhat less tolerant of old gas and often require a good cleaning.
As far as varnish/gum goes, I have found that acetone works amazingly well for breaking this goop down with some overnight soaking and a tooth brush. Once it is clean, spray the whole shootin' match with WD-40 and wipe dry.
Just keep any plastics or rubber away from acetone as it will likely dissolve them on contact.

hey everyone!!!! today i replaced the spark plug and got new fuel in the tank. i removed the air filter and it looked ok. still no dice!!!! i checked the spark again in the dim light and it seems ok. what it is doing now is when you are are turning it over it seems to be blowing back through the carburator. i also tried to prime the carb with starting fluid but it doesn't even act like it wants to start. thanks everbody i hope i can get it running soon!!!!!

How old is engine? Points or CDI? Has it ever been disassembled???
Check flywheel key for shearing!!!

the manufacture date is 2003 but the guy said it was rarely used. the whole cart looks very good just a little dirty. it looks like the original motor. never been disassembled before. i don' know enough about these little engines to tell if it has points or what. how long are these motors supposed to last anyway?

how long are these motors supposed to last anyway?Lifespan of engines varies according to the kind of use/abuse it gets. Expect a few years at the very least.
Again...check flywheel key. A shift of just a couple of degrees can cause backfire through carb. How is compression?

where could i get some info on how to tear down a motor and repair it. since i am new to this i think it would be helpful.

how do i get to the flywheel key remember i am a newbie at this?Flywheel has to be removed but I would check CDI pack first. I would STRONGLY recommend getting a service manual before doing anything. These manuals are easily understandable and step you through all trouble shooting procedures.
can u check compression like u would on a car motor?Much easier on small engines. When you pull on recoil cord you should feel compression trying to bounce back. Should not feel mushy or leaky.
how much do i need to disassemble to get to what i need to check?Ordinary hand tools such as socket and combination wrenches. Again...try to get manual.

Yeah you can't realy use a compresion tester on these small engines because ALL these engines leak a bit. A more acurate method for small engines is a leak down gauge.
