I recently bought a kart off ebay. 2 seater, older engine, nothing fancy. It has no brakes. I've researched a bit but can't seem to find a solution. There are no wheel hubs, only a cotter pin holds the wheel on the axel. Same for the sprocket. Whats the best way to add brakes to this cart? Thanks for any and all advise.20

I've heard of people using a disc brake and using the sprocket as the caliper. I didn't believe it, so I tried it on the mini chopper I built. It works. I'll bet it's not the safest thing, and I can't say you will have a positive result, I can just speak to my personal experience.

assuming that your axle is totally covered with that piece of tube you would have to do what robert said or cut some of that covering off and put a disc brake on the axle {drum brake would be much harder to install} and you would have to find a way to mount your caliper on the frame somewheres
hope this helps

disk brake on the axel would not help, I think he has bearings in rear wheels.
