Most, if not all, of these karts came with twin Clinton A400's or maybe A490's (?) or Panthers. Panther was really the same as the A400. All 2 cycles with hp range of 2 1/2 to 3. See my post on Antique kart engines.
The left engine was normal counterclockwise rotation while right engine engine was clockwise. They were otherwise identical.
Other than Ebay I haven't seen the reversed engine in at least 30+ years.
I recently saw a matched pair NOS (New Old Stock) with a starting bid of $3000. There is a reversed Clinton recoil on Ebay now for $39 which is about what complete engine sold for in early '60's.

There were other engine manufacturers that used this same configuration such as West Bend, Chrysler, Lauson Power Products (now Tecumseh) and others. Clinton was the most popular and affordable.
My 'lefties' will likely be buried with me, meaning they are not for sale. Orange one has been completely rebuilt and could probably fetch about $300 or better. Yellow one is an even better story.

I couldn't even guess model. I can only guess the year, possibly 1962ish  Does guy you purchased this from know the history of this frame? May be worth the time to trace it back!!!

There's a kart in an old book I have called Midget Motoring and Karting which looks very similar to that kart that you have. It has dual engine mounts as well with two Clinton A400's on it. The seat even looks the same where a gas tank would be mounted where the two holes are. Unfortunately it makes no reference as to what it is.

WOW...
Between Ironmans kart and one of my 'lefties', we're two thirds of the way into one of these!!!
I can smell the hydrocarbons now!!!

PS I think we should have a national kart meet (just we diygokart members). Say somewhere in mid USA.

Other people have brought up to have a kart meet too. It would be pretty cool to get together and see what others have done. :cheers2:

@ Russ - The only two cycle I've dealt with extensively is the tiny .15 in my R/C truck. I have a couple others, weed eater type engines, but I have yet to remove that 6.5 Duraforce from the lawnmower.

@Ironman - It would be awesome if you could actually get two engines on that thing, Even if one wasn't a leftie and you could get two facing the same direction it would be cool.

need info model h30-35316m serial number 9233b it is a tecum. motor thinking about getting are they any good ....Can't go wrong with Tecumseh. I have found that power to weight ratio is somewhat higher than Briggs. However, some Tecumseh's do have some reliability issues. My opinion.
How old is engine? Or is it brand new? I did a search on h30-35316m and came up with nothing. H30's are pretty common but complete number doesn't come up.

I have yet to remove that 6.5 Duraforce from the lawnmower. When you're ready, online manuals are available at lawn-boy.com. Although I've worked on 2 cycles for many moons...I never worked on a Lawn-Boy until about 2 years ago. Before that, I thought they were crap. I'm a little wiser now. Still not a geenyous.

Maybe the right-hand motor could be mounted in the "normal" direction, run the chain to a jackshaft just ahead or behind the motor, and then run the other end of the jackshaft to the righthand rear wheel?..... A 2 motor kart would be fun! OR.... (Russ, help me on this) a reed-valve motor will run backwards, but I forget if these motors are reed, etc...?

4 Stroke motors aren't reed valve so getting one to run backwards would be extremely difficult without some heavy moding.

It's OK. I got it.
You are correct that 2 cycle reed engines can run backwards but require major ignition changes. Magneto, flywheel, timing, etc. To my knowledge, no small engine manufacturer makes these in the reversed configuration anymore. Not really cost effective.

Would need to grind a new camshaft... just for starters. Imagine the expense.:rolleyes3:

Too bad it isn't as easy as those old Cox .049 model airplane engines. If you tried to "finger start" them in the cold, half the time they'd run backwards! Maybe the jackshaft idea then, for a twin engine?

Oh, I have a tiny engine like that too. It's a thimble drome, don't know the size though.
